Next week is the beginning of Lent. The time of year when many Christians attempt to live more simply, pray, and fast to grow closer to God. Lent is a time to repent—to turn back to God—re-focus our lives to be more like Jesus.

Over the next 8 weeks, Kingwood UMC will share stories of how God is moving through people being served by people endeavoring to be more like Jesus. Our hope is that you will gain knowledge about some of the local and global missions KUMC supports and be inspired to grow closer to our Savior through service to others.

Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant and whoever wants to be first, must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Mark 10:43-45

Feed My Lambs

By Cathy Parva
Director, KUMC Missions

Our first narrative is about a program that was started nearly 14 years ago. “Feed My Lambs” started as a summer program in 2002 to feed hungry children in the New Caney area. Here’s an excerpt from that first experience:

“Our last week of the program we branched into a new area of service, taking lunches to a government-subsidized apartment complex in Porter. We were well received by apartment management, and by the second day, the residents were waiting for us to arrive! This was a most rewarding experience as we fed not only hungry young children but also many senior citizens who (we learned) often do not have enough to eat. We were so blessed by God’s hand in this work and the bounty of food that we were able to share with His children, our neighbors.”

From this small beginning, through prayer, and a faithful group of volunteers, this mustard seed of an idea now serves this community all year. Even in our own backyard, we miss opportunities to humbly serve the Lord unless we take time to press the pause button and prepare our minds and look inside our hearts to where He is leading us.

During this time of Lent, come to God and humbly ask for guidance and direction on where you can share the Good news, and how you can serve your neighbor.

Work hard to feed hungry people. Satisfy the needs of those who are crushed. Then my blessing will light up your darkness. And the night of your suffering will become as bright as the noonday sun. Isaiah 58:10
